International research awards

The Western Vascular Institute (WVI) has established strong international reputation and has been honored with 26 international research awards. Our team of researchers has published 80 international peer-reviewed papers, 7 book chapters, 250 abstracts and 17 patents. The Team has given in excess of 250 international presentations, and 270 national presentations. Vascular science and device innovation are the primary interests of the WVI and for this purpose we have collaborated with the National University of Ireland, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, and Trinity College Dublin. We have secured government funding from Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and IDA Ireland (industrial Development Authority), in addition to research and educational grants form the MedTech and Pharmaceutical industries.

The Western Vascular Institute

The Western Vascular Institute was created to provide a highly specialized team, comprising surgeons, clinicians, engineers, scientists and information technologists, whose focus is the management of vascular disease. The WVI was set up in 2001 as an integrated cohesion of multiple peripheral specialties relating to Vascular Surgery in the West of Ireland. The components of our practice are 1. Management of vascular disorders; 2. Delivery of state-of-the-art diagnostic and cutting-edge therapeutic modalities in clinical care; 3. Participation in vascular research, 4. Teaching tomorrow’s providers of Endovascular Specialist. The Western Vascular Institute has allowed its individual physicians to maintain their unique areas of expertise in a centre of excellence while at the same time fostering a shared goal of effectively managing patients with vascular disorders and delivering care in a multi-disciplinary single setting.

Pediatric Cardiology

Pediatrics is an academic field related to the study of development and disorders in children and adolescents. Research projects at the Department of Pediatrics, Clinical Sciences Lund at Lund University include the study of disorders in newborn infants (neonatology), especially diagnostics and prevention of brain injury in preterm infants and pain research, diagnostics and treatment of heart diseases (pediatric cardiology) and of renal disorders particularly hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, vasculitis and IgA nephropathy (pediatric nephrology). Further research activities are involved in the study of neurological disorders (pediatric neurology), handicap, as well as treatment and long-term follow-up of cancer, metabolic diseases (diabetes), and cystic fibrosis.

Polisano hospital brings new approaches to the medical field, both through high standards of technological equipments used, and through a great cooperation with prestigious Medical Centers and Universities from Austria, France, Canada. A very good collaboration exists also between Polisano and Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, the leading organization in this project. Polisano’s Center of Excellence in Radiology and Medical Imaging is one of the most modern and endowed with the highest technological standards centers in the central region of Romania. Radiology and Imaging Center’s mission is to meet the medical problems through the fastest and correct diagnosis, a noninvasive and non-irradiating one. This center covers all medical segments (the entire range of possible examination: heart and vascular, breast, prostate, abdominal, pelvic, brain, spine and chest), providing patients the latest medical equipment, some of them unique in Romanian medical field, such as MRI, all types of CT exams, Gamma Camera, ultrasound, Intensive Care Unit etc.

Polisano hospital is a limited liability company whose wide spectrum of investigations and specializations includes various first-timers in Romania: a center for cardiovascular surgery for adults and children, a center of excellence in medical imaging, the in-vitro fertility center with the highest rate of success, etc. Polisano was the first private hospital in Romania, and has been founded 20 years ago. This proves its great expertise both in the medical field, as well as a great appreciation from the patients that have used the medical services offered by this clinic. Even though it is a private hospital, its management strategy relies especially on saving he patients’ lives, that is why exceptional medical interventions are made pro bono. This was the recent case of surgeries performed to 10 children suffering of congenital cardiac malformations.
